In Ontario and all other provinces, you can see a chiropractor or physiotherapist without a referral from a medical doctor, nurse practitioner or other health care professional. Chiropractors and physiotherapists often work closely with medical doctors and other health care professionals. Many doctors refer patients to chiropractors or physiotherapists when they believe their treatment will help alleviate their patient’s spine, muscle or joint pain. Similarly, chiropractors and physiotherapists frequently refer patients to medical doctors when appropriate. However, there are some insurance companies that require a referral from a medical doctor in order to direct bill. It is always a good idea to check with your insurance company first prior to booking an appointment to ensure you are covered.
