What is Pelvic Floor Physiotherapy

Pelvic floor physiotherapy is a branch of physiotherapy that focuses on the assessment and management of conditions relating to the pelvic floor. The pelvic floor is a muscle system that is responsible for holding up the pelvic organs, and is often damaged during childbirth. Pelvic floor physiotherapy is not just for mothers - it is for anyone experiencing pelvic pain, and can be used to treat a wide variety of conditions. Physiotherapy treatment may include stretching and strengthening exercise prescription, manual therapy, education and activity modification. Pelvic floor physiotherapists are regulated by the College of Physiotherapists of Ontario.

Pelvic Floor Physiotherapy at The Functional Approach

At The Functional Approach, our pelvic floor physiotherapist strives to help patients overcome the challenges of pelvic floor dysfunction and to improve their overall quality of life. While many of the conditions they treat are common, they do not need to be a part of one's daily life.

At your pelvic floor physiotherapy appointment, your Physiotherapist will learn about your medical history, and perform a comprehensive assessment. They will then communicate your diagnosis and explain the treatment plan that they have created for you, tailored to your goals.. Your physiotherapist may also prescribe beneficial exercises that will help with your condition. Seeking pelvic floor physiotherapy while pregnant can help prepare Mothers for labor and delivery. If seeking postpartum care, we ask that Mothers wait until after their 6 week check up has occurred.
