What is a Concussion

A concussion is a neurometabolic disorder caused by an impact to the head or body which causes the brain to move backwards and forwards inside the skull. This trauma causes spasming of the blood vessels that supply the brain resulting in a decrease in energy supply to the brain. This decrease in energy results in a variety of symptoms and the symptoms that one experiences are based on the area of the brain that is being affected. Symptoms of a concussion can include:

  • Headache or “pressure” in head
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Balance problems or dizziness, or double or blurry vision
  • Bothered by light or noise
  • Feeling sluggish, hazy, foggy or groggy
  • Confusion, concentration or memory problems
  • Not feeling “right” or not feeling like yourself
  • Disrupted sleep
  • Emotional dysregulation
  • Anxiety or depression

Concussion Management at The Functional Approach

At The Functional Approach our practitioners are trained to manage concussions. This starts with a thorough history and physical examination. This helps our practitioners rule out any red flags and identify areas of the brain that may be affected. After the examination our patient’s will be placed on a comprehensive rehabilitation plan to specifically address their symptoms and be provided with education so that our patients can actively participate in the recovery process. With any concussion, it is best practice to co-manage this condition with other health care practitioners which can include your family doctor, a psychotherapist or psychiatrist, optometrist, physiotherapist and chiropractors to help better address the complex nature of this injury. If you think you have suffered a mild traumatic brain injury, have it assessed.
