What is Osteopathy?
Osteopathy is a holistic, hands-on approach to healthcare that focuses on the interrelationship between the body's structure and function. In Ontario, osteopathic manual practitioners adhere to high professional standards set by recognized osteopathic associations. Osteopathy encompasses various manual techniques, mobilizations, and soft tissue approaches to address acute and chronic pain. By restoring musculoskeletal balance and proper biomechanics, osteopathy helps alleviate discomfort and enhance overall body function and well-being. Practitioners tailor treatments to individual needs, providing effective and personalized care.
The classical osteopathic approach aims to put your body in a position that promotes health, guiding structures back into alignment, improving the body's natural ability to heal and function on its own. Realigning the structure allows the body's natural and innate ability to heal and operate more efficiently, with the least amount of stress.
Osteopathy at The Functional Approach
At The Functional Approach, our Osteopathic manual practitioners are trained in a variety of manual therapy techniques that aim to facilitate the health of joints and muscles, realign and strengthen the structural framework, while creating stability and balance within the body.
Osteopathy is beneficial for people of all ages, whether you are rehabilitating an injury, preparing for surgery or looking for preventative maintenance. Manual techniques are used to gently adjust the skeletal framework and restore function within the fascial, muscular, and connective soft tissues encouraging healthy circulation and nerve supply to all parts of the body.
At your appointment, your Osteopath will learn about your medical history and perform a comprehensive assessment. Based on your assessment, they will explain the areas of restriction that may be contributing to the root cause of your issue and how they may be related. Visual aids are often used to help educate and explain the patterns being found in your body. You may be prescribed corrective tools to help improve overall posture, and assist in improving or maintaining progress if needed.
Osteopathic care serves to understand the relationship between different systems of the body (immune, musculoskeletal, respiratory, nervous etc.) and create a treatment that restores communication between them, encouraging health throughout the body.
